Award History

Bayero Agabi not too long ago won West Africa's best Information and Communication Technology reporter of the year. The award was presented at the Nigeria Information and Communication technology awards, NIITA 2003. The judges described Agabi's winning entry as an embodiment of well-researched, balanced analytical reports. They added that he took his time deliberately to teach and create interest in ICT. The panelists, in examining Bayero's winning entry described it as an embodiment of beautiful prose on television screen. He was also commended for the insightful manner of presentation that servesto inform a wide audiencestill largely ignorant of the basic issues and trends in the ICT industry. Agabi was a pioneer member of the prestigious AIT Kaakaki news crew as editor and part of the coordinating teamfor The Parliament, a programme that won several accolades for its daring posture on political issues during the turbulent era of military in the 90s.

Bayero has gained massive recognition winning the in-house AIT Best News Reporter, and Best ICT Radio Programme award by the Computer Association of Nigeria COAN now NCS). He has won the COAN Best ICT TV programme award and the International Award for Excellence.

Nigeria's premier information and communications technology programme on television - AIT Infotech Network, has got global rating in an international research done for Microsoft Incorporated by Research Solutions.

The research place AIT Infotech Network side by side BBC and CNN technology programmes in the sub-region. AIT Infotech Network was the only one selected in the sub-region with good reach in information, packaging and depth in treating issues.In his reaction, the presenter and producer of the programme, Bayero Agabi, said he felt challenged by this achievement. "Although it's worth cheering about, I see it more as a challenge to competence, capability, knowledge and sustainability. I strongly believe this attainment should go to my employers for

believing in technology, giving me the opportunity to express myself most especially Ladi Lawal and Tosin Odukoya for their consistent monitoring of quality of contentand ensuring the programme is sustained."With this result,AIT Infotech Network becomes the best source for information and communication technology, education and information technology development in the West Africa sub-region. Before this international acclaim, AIT Infotech Network had been twice awarded the best (ICT)programme on television by the Nigerian umbrella body for information technology professionals - Computer Association Of Nigeria (COAN), now Nigeria Computer Society.

The programme has also received the International Award for Excellence for its contributions to national development by the International Federation for Excellence. Agabi further said the commitment this year is to bridge the digital divide. "With this we are going to focus more on promoting technology usage, its potentials and education," he added. So far Bayero Agabi has won over 15 awards both local and international for his efforts at promoting ICT development in the region. Some of his awards include excellence award from association of telecoms operator of Nigeria, Nigeria computer society as best ICT reporter for three years consequently both on radio and television, excellence award from international federation for excellence, the uneca/aisi media wards 2005, excellence award from economic students association UNIBEN etc.
